When you look at the discount cabinets in your kitchen, you probably never consider how they impact the flooring and vice versa. If you’re looking to get new cabinets and drastically change the look of your kitchen, don’t forget how the flooring interacts with the cabinet choices. It’s easy to overlook flooring since most people don’t look at their feet and instead up at the cabinets. The cabinets are a focal point of the kitchen, but the flooring is an important design aspect as well.
Color
Kitchen flooring comes in many shades and styles from plain white to ornate. It can be linoleum, tile and a myriad of other materials. You may consider how the cabinets look with the color of the walls and the appliances, but probably not the floor. It’s important that the color and style of the new cabinet doesn’t clash with the floor. If it does clash, then it will be painfully apparent and an eyesore, but you won’t be able to do much about it. You should have samples of the cabinetry sent to you, so you can compare how it will look with your walls and flooring. Everything should be complementary as this is your dream kitchen.
Measurements and Layout
When a kitchen is being built, there are two possibilities when it comes to flooring and white cabinets. You can either put in the flooring first and place the counters and cabinets on top of it or put in the cabinets first and cut the flooring around the cabinet. If you moved into the home, then you likely had no choice in the matter, but it’s important to take note of the concept. If the flooring was cut around the counter and cabinets and you plan on changing the layout and measurements, then you could be dealing with some flooring issues. There may be space between the floor and the cabinets or more flooring will need to be cut to accommodate the new cabinets and countertops. It’s not a big issue if it’s linoleum, but cutting tile could be time consuming and there is worry of breakage.
Outdated flooring
We talked about making sure the flooring and cabinetry match, but what happens when that’s not possible, or if matching means having ugly cabinets? If you live in an older home, then you might have flooring that is way out of date. The 1970s were not a pleasant time for interior design and lime green linoleum has lived long past its expiration date.
There’s no reason why you should have to choose a cheap cabinet that’s ugly because your floor is hideous. Instead, take this as the perfect opportunity to replace the flooring as well. This way you can update the flooring style and make sure your cabinets look great with it. Don’t let bad flooring ruin your dream kitchen.
