The case in favor of RTA kitchen cabinets over store-bought versions is pretty clear-cut: why pay someone else to do the assembly, and then pay a shipping company to ship a bunch of empty wooden boxes full of air, when you can get the same quality or better? Not to mention that you can be sure cabinets you put together yourself were done right, and weren’t subsequently damaged during shipping, when they’re assembled and at their most vulnerable.
So the real question is: RTA or full custom? Now, beware, many store brand cabinets claim to be “custom,” but what they really are is semi-custom, as are most RTA cabinets, including ours. “Full custom” means a local carpenter comes to your house, takes measurements, draws out designs, and then creates cabinets just for you, by hand, from scratch. Even the best RTA kitchen cabinets can’t really hold up to that in terms of customization, and if the carpenter who makes them for you is good, custom cabinet quality can be top-notch.
But what if one of your beautiful and expensive custom cabinets gets damaged? Nobody plans for them to, but hey, life happens. What if it’s ten or fifteen years down the line? Will that carpenter still be around? Will someone else be able to replicate his or her work? How much will that cost? With RTA cabinets, customization comes in the form of numerous options, but at the end of the day, those options are still standardized. That means you can replace just one cabinet if you need to.
